A workshop on the Coastal Plan and climate change in Tangier

On March 16, 2022, the two activity centers of UNEP’s Mediterranean Action Plan, Plan Bleu andPAP,organized the first Coastal Plan Scoping Workshop.

Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Department of the Environment of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region, the workshop brought together around fifty participants within the framework of the MedProgrammeof the Global Environment Fund.

Throughout the day, the objective of this workshop was to initiate the development of the Coastal Plan of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region, led by the PAP and supported by theClimagine participatory methodology of Plan Bleu. This method aims to include and involve as many stakeholders, sectors and scales as possible in order to feed into the preparation of the Coastal Plan.

These participatory reflections concern adaptation to coastal risks based on ecosystems, as well as the engagement of the private and financial sectors in efforts to adapt to climate change in these areas. Based on the conclusions, priority actions and “dimensions of sustainability” identified during this workshop, the PAP and Plan Bleu will continue their consultation efforts during future workshops in order to support sustainable development and the protection of environment.

The workshop was a great success and brought together national and local government representatives, including some from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, scientific institutions such as the National Fisheries Research Institute of Morocco and NGOs Moroccan organizations such as the AGIR Association.
