Plan Bleu has published its new report « Spotlighting Adaptation Solutions to Enhance the Resilience of Mediterranean Aquaculture to Climate Change », developed as part of the MedAquaCC project.
As rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, extreme weather events, and changing marine ecosystems increasingly affect the Mediterranean, the region’s aquaculture sector faces significant challenges. To support stakeholders, this report highlights practical adaptation solutions based on the latest scientific knowledge and field experience.
Drawing on an extensive review of the scientific literature and contributions from more than 80 experts and stakeholders from across the Mediterranean, the publication provides an operational approach to climate change adaptation. It identifies the sector’s main vulnerabilities, showcases examples of good practices already being implemented, and offers recommendations to strengthen the long-term resilience of aquaculture systems.
The report emphasizes the importance of :
- Improving monitoring and early warning systems;
- Strengthening producers’ capacities;
- Encouraging innovation and the diversification of practices;
- Promoting public policies that support the sector’s adaptation to climate change.
By making these recommendations and practical experiences widely available, Plan Bleu aims to provide policymakers, researchers, and aquaculture professionals with a key reference tool to support the transition towards a more resilient and sustainable Mediterranean aquaculture sector.
