The intensification of tourism activities along the Mediterranean coastline and the growing impacts of climate change demand that we move past sector-specific approaches to build a sustainable tourism model within the Pelagos Sanctuary.
To operationalize this transition, this report, resulting from the second workshop of the ADAPT-Pelagos project, presents the co-construction and prioritization of thirty sustainability indicators (covering climate, biodiversity, circular economy, and governance) designed to serve as genuine instruments for public decision-making. The document outlines recommendations from field experts and managers to prioritize indicators that leverage existing regulatory data such as tracking water restriction days while pointing out the complexity of indicators that require cross-border harmonization.
Lastly, the report highlights the importance of an integrated governance framework combining regulation, digital tools for visitor flow redirection, and Nature-based Solutions, while insisting on the legal recognition of ecological prejudice and the essential inclusion of all generations of residents to ensure the social acceptability of these measures.
