In the framework of the World Conservation Congress (IUCN WCC), on September 6 from 11:00 to 13:00, the Sustainable Tourism Community and the Mediterranean Biodiversity Community, of the Interreg Med program, of which Plan Bleu is a member, have organized together the Campus Session “Streamlining biodiversity in sectoral development: a sustainable touristic model in the Mediterranean that ensures resilient coastal and marine ecosystems. Innovative tools & practices to ensure a healthy mediterranean biodiversity and sustainable tourism” online.
The two communities co-organized an exchange session on innovative tools and practices to ensure a healthy Mediterranean biodiversity and sustainable tourism, thanks to the participation of territorial cooperation projects active in the Mediterranean region: POSBEMED2, WETNET, TUNE-UP, MPA-ENGAGE, DESTIMED+, MPA–NETWORKS, PLASTICBUSTERS MPAS and INCIRCLE.
The conference was divided into 3 parts:
- Ecosystem-based governance in Mediterranean coastal and marine ecosystems
- A practical training on concrete solutions to increase the resilience of ecosystems in highly affected tourism sites.
- Practical training on concrete solutions to reduce tourism pressure in biodiversity hotspots by promoting a participatory circular economy.
This Campus Session highlighted good practices and tools implemented in the framework of the different INTERREG MED projects in order to raise awareness on the coastal issues of the Mediterranean basin and to provide an overview of Ecosystem-Based Management approaches.
Participants were able to discover problems and solutions already successfully tested that they can apply in other regions under similar pressures.
Representatives of the Joint Secretariat of the Interreg MED program closed the session.
