Edited Volume – Unraveling the Impact of Environmentally Harmful Subsidies in the Mediterranean

Despite a promising international momentum towards sustainable development, unsustainable practices persist, often supported by economic incentives that promote the expansion of activity at the expense of ecosystem conservation and restoration. These environmentally harmful subsidies are nearly six times higher than the spending devoted to environmental protection. Perceived as beneficial for certain economic sectors, they also exist in the Mediterranean region.

This raises a crucial question: how can we identify, quantify, and reform these harmful practices in our region?

The innovative report by Plan Bleu, the first to specifically address environmentally harmful subsidies in the Mediterranean, tackles this issue by offering an in-depth analysis and tailored recommendations suited to the region’s diverse contexts, sectors, and frameworks. Written by experts from Mediterranean countries, it ensures local expertise and solid empirical analysis.

Each chapter of the report examines a key issue related to environmentally harmful subsidies. We conduct in-depth analyses to define and identify these subsidies in various sectors, such as fisheries, water management, fossil fuels, and tourism.

Aligned with international initiatives, this report aims to significantly contribute to the international dialogue on subsidy reform and the adoption of more virtuous economic tools, paving the way for a more sustainable future for the Mediterranean.
