Nature-based Solutions in the Mediterranean: How can Nature Help Tackle the Growing Air Pollution Crisis?

Air pollution is a growing concern in Mediterranean cities, with two-thirds of countries in the region exceeding air quality standards set by the European Union and the World Health Organization.

This new note explores how Nature-based Solutions (NbS), such as green roofs, urban trees, and green and blue corridors, can help reduce air pollution while delivering multiple co-benefits, including temperature regulation, improved public health, and biodiversity enhancement.

Drawing on several Plan Bleu publications and complementary research, the paper highlights the potential of NbS at different scales and emphasizes the need for integrated, context-specific approaches to strengthen urban resilience and enhance the well-being of populations.
