Desalination in the Mediterranean: Measures to Mitigate Environmental Risks and Impacts

Through this thematic note entitled “Desalination in the Mediterranean: Measures to Mitigate Environmental Risks and Impacts”, Plan Bleu reviews all the issues associated with desalination in the Mediterranean. Through a rich review of the literature, this note takes a holistic approach to the impacts of the sector of activity while focusing on the environmental sphere, not forgetting the associated energy and human health issues. The note also discusses potential solutions and mitigation measures to avoid, reduce and compensate for these impacts. Some regulatory aspects are also addressed, and an overture on more sustainable management of water resources to be prioritized over desalination is proposed.
