On 25th October 2017, Plan Bleu and the five institutions members of PANACEA project organized a workshop opened to the members of the MED Biodiversity Protection Community in Barcelona (Spain).
The objective was allowing the thematic projects to identify their political targets and the possible actions in order to reach them. The 9 projects were divided in three working groups relevant to the three panels of the knowledge sharing event “Bridging the Science-Practice-Policy Gaps in Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection” held the two previous days:
- Addressing emergent, transboundary biodiversity protection challenges in Protected Areas, such as climate change and marine litter.
- Sustainable resource use in Protected Areas, with a focus on fisheries.
- Integrated ecosystem monitoring, focusing on freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems.
At the end of this workshop, the projects decided, in collaboration with PANACEA team, of the tools that will be developed by PANACEA until 2019 to capitalize on the results achieved by the community.
Working groups’ results :
- Group 1 – Addressing emergent, transboundary biodiversity protection challenges in Protected Areas, such as climate change and marine litter Results available soon
Results available soon - Group 2 – Sustainable resource use in Protected Areas, with a focus on fisheries
Results available soon - Group 3 – Integrated ecosystem monitoring, focusing on freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems
This third working group, led by Plan Bleu, targeted the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands, the ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zones Management) Protocol and the IMAP Programme (integrated monitoring and assessment of the Mediterranean Sea and coasts) of UNEP-MAP, as well as the EU’s Maritime Spatial Planning Directive and Habitat Directive as being prioritary for the subject at hand.
In the framework of group 3, PANACEA proposed to develop the following tools in collaboration with the projects involved in the working group (AMARe, EcoSUSTAIN, POSBEMED and WETNET) :
– a document or technical report
– a technical database on the projects-related activities
– a geospatial data platform for mapping the projects’ results
