As part of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the Barcelona Convention (BC COP 24), Plan Bleu is co-organizing, alongside the European Topic Centre on Spatial Analysis and Synthesis (ETC-UMA) and partners from the Natural Heritage Community of the Interreg Euro-MED programme, a side event dedicated to accelerating restoration action of forests and wetlands across the Mediterranean region.
Amid growing climate, water, and human pressures, ecological restoration represents a key lever to enhance the resilience of Mediterranean territories. This side event will showcase technical mitigation solutions, proven restoration practices, and participatory governance approaches developed within the Interreg Euro-Mediterranean community to support policymakers and facilitate the implementation of public policies.
The event will feature:
- Innovative practical solutions for restoring forests and wetlands;
- Participatory governance approaches, reinforced by key messages from the latest FAO report on the state of Mediterranean forests;
- Policy recommendations developed under the Natural Heritage Mission;
- A political dialogue bringing together national actors and regional organizations to identify concrete pathways for strengthening alignment with regional and international frameworks, including:
- The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF),
- The Barcelona Convention (MSSD, ICZM Protocol, post-2020 SAPBIO),
- The EU Nature Restoration Regulation and the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy,
- National restoration strategies.
Objective: To outline a clear roadmap for more effectively integrating knowledge, operational tools, and governance solutions at the core of restoration policies in the Mediterranean.
