4th Mediterranean Forest Week

03/17/2015 to 03/20/2015

Plan Bleu, along with its regional partners, is committed to organising a Mediterranean Forest Week every two years in a member country.

The Mediterranean Forest Week has been conceived as a common regional platform for cooperation on Mediterranean forests, aiming at improving the dialogue between the Mediterranean forest research communitypolicy-makers and the relevant stakeholders as well as at communicating to the international community and the society at large the relevance and challenges affecting Mediterranean forests.

After the success of the previous Mediterranean Forest Weeks, the Spanish authorities welcomed this fourth edition in Barcelona focusing on the following issue: “Improving livelihoods: the role of Mediterranean forest value chains in a green economy”.

  • Strengthen exchanges and synergies between stakeholders involved in the integrated management of Mediterranean forests and other woodlands
  • Follow up the Tlemcen Declaration and implement the Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests (SFMF): policy orientations for integrated manage- ment of forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean landscapes
  • Promote innovation, cross-sectoral cooperation and the development of the economy (including green economy and bioeconomy) to increase resilience of forested ecosystems
  • Involve key value chain stakeholders of goods and services provided by Mediterranean forests ecosystems (e.g. from the agriculture, water, energy, biodiversity conservation and tourism sectors) in order to incorporate their expectations as well as cross-sectoral issues into National Forest Programmes
  • Strengthen the link between science and decision makers to establish a common vision of the future of development and management of Mediterranean forests and woodlands
  • Prepare a presentation of the results of the IV MFW for the World Forestry Congress to be held in Durban in September 2015

Session  "Water and Forest: An integrated management crucial to cope with global changes in the Mediterranean"

At the occasion of the IVth Mediterranean Forest Week, Plan Bleu organized with EFIMED on Tuesday 17 March from 14:30 to 16:30 a Session  "Water and Forest: An integrated management crucial to cope with global changes in the Mediterranean". For more information, see the Concept Note.

Contact : Nelly Bourlion

This session was designed as a cross-sectorial dialogue that aims at developing a better mutual understanding of the relevance of the water-related ecosystem services, by answering the following questions:

  • What are the priorities in managing forest for water in the Mediterranean? What new policy developments are being implemented?
  • How to set a favourable regulatory framework to enhance the role and the use of forests as “green infrastructures” providing high quality drinking water? Does it make sense?
  • Are water-related Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) a relevant option?
  • What are the adaptation opportunities associated with forest management, in the context of water and aquatic ecosystems?
  • How to enhance a cross-sectorial science-policy dialogue in the field of forest and water?

Side-event on MSSD Review

During the  Mediterranean Forest Week, Plan Bleu organised on 17th March a side-event on Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) review.

This meeting provided the opportunity for discussing how forest key messages could be integrated into the new MSSD.
