Unpacking the potential of Integrated Coastal Zone Management & Maritime Spatial Planning processes for sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean

This report explores the potential of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) and Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) legislative frameworks to transform tourism in the Mediterranean. In a context marked by climate challenges and the pressure of mass tourism, it offers a knowledge tool to harmonize human activities with the preservation of ecosystems.

Produced as part of the Community4Tourism project (Interreg Euro-MED), this guide analyzes 10 emblematic case studies from both shores of the basin. It highlights concrete strategies for regulating maritime leisure activities, evaluating environmental impacts, addressing urban “touristification,” and promoting community-based ecotourism.

The report defines key guidelines for decision-makers, emphasizing the importance of basing tourism policies on rigorous scientific diagnostics, multi-level coordination, and effective stakeholder participation to support the resilience of coastal territories.
