Plan Bleu at COP24: Commitments and Contributions for a Sustainable Mediterranean

The 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP24) was held from 2 to 5 December 2025 in Cairo, bringing together Mediterranean countries and key regional stakeholders committed to the protection of the marine and coastal environment. This edition, held under the theme of
sustainable blue economy, marked an important step for environmental cooperation in the Mediterranean.

Throughout the conference, Plan Bleu participated in several side events dedicated to biodiversity, climate change, environmental governance, data and indicators, as well as the sustainable management of coastal areas. These events provided an opportunity to showcase the analyses and tools developed by Plan Bleu, particularly for monitoring the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) and supporting regional public policies.

COP24 was also an opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP/UNEP), a significant moment that highlighted the historical importance of regional cooperation in protecting the Mediterranean Sea.

Through its technical contributions, thematic expertise, and active participation in the discussions, Plan Bleu reaffirms its central role in the environmental transition of the Mediterranean basin and in the collective implementation of the decisions adopted by Mediterranean countries.
