Webinar on “environmental contracts” a multi-stakeholder and multi-level governance tool for an effective governance of Mediterranean wetlands and MPAs – 29/10/2021

The Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection Community (MBPC) and its Working Group 2 on Sustainable Use of Natural Resources will organise a webinar on success stories on “environmental contracts”, a multi-stakeholder and multi-level governance tool for an effective governance of Mediterranean wetlands and MPAs, through the projects WETNET and TUNE UP. The event will be held online on October 29th, at 11:00 AM (CET).

This will be the third of a series of WG2 webinars on best practices, aiming at sustainably using the natural resources in the Mediterranean region. The event will be coordinated by the CPMR Inter Mediterranean Commission.

The aim of this webinar is to enhance knowledge on innovative approaches and tools to improve wetlands & MPAs management ensuring the involvement and participation of all relevant stakeholders and biodiversity protection.

The multi-stakeholder and multi-level management model : “environmental contracts” of the TUNE UP and WETNET projects

For several decades, the Mediterranean basin has seen its rich biodiversity threatened by many factors. The Interreg Med programme, which is actively working to conserve this natural heritage, has developed two projects in this sense: WETNET (2016-2019) created to protect wetlands and its successor TUNE UP (2019-2022) which focuses on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Both projects aim to bring together different stakeholders in a voluntary contract known as the “Wetlands Contract” for the WETNET project and the “Environmental Contract” for TUNE UP. Within the framework of these projects, several objectives have been outlined:

  • To build a common territorial strategy for the protection of biodiversity
  • To strengthen the coordination between the actors and to develop the communication capacity of their regional, national and international network
  • To improve the management of the areas concerned and the dissemination of information on good practices for the preservation of the environment
  • To obtain a scientific vision of the actors in developing policies that respond to the adverse effects of climate change in the areas concerned by these projects

The results obtained in the pilot areas of these two projects show that, with the implementation of a good methodology, these contracts contribute effectively to the improvement of collaboration between local organisations and stakeholders and to the active participation of actors committed to the implementation of policies for biodiversity protection. They allow for a better exchange of information between these actors and a more effective awareness of the value of these protected areas.
