Plan Bleu took part in a workshop on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP), held in Brussels and organized by Mercator Ocean International. Represented by Samson Bellières, Project Officer for Green and Blue Transition, Plan Bleu delivered a key message: turning environmental data into concrete levers for public decision-making, in line with its mission within the UNEP/MAP system.
Discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening the science–policy interface. Plan Bleu’s indicators : such as coastal urbanization, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss, directly support MSP processes in both EU and non-EU Mediterranean countries.
Digital tools supporting governance
The workshop also emphasized the growing role of digital platforms. Tools such as WESR and MapX, developed by UNEP/GRID-Geneva, make environmental data more accessible, interoperable, and usable in near real time, thereby facilitating informed decision-making.
Beyond individual projects, discussions stressed the need to build lasting and institutionalized systems. Plan Bleu will continue to strengthen cooperation between European platforms and Mediterranean observatories, contributing to more structured and sustainable environmental governance.
