The online event is co-organised by Plan Bleu UNEP/MAP and ETC-UMA and aims to survey the latest science and policies on Mediterranean wetlands, discussing the ideas and showcasing the actions that can pave the way to a healthy and sustainable future. The webinar aims to raise awareness and catalyse real change, driven by the urgent need to protect, conserve and restore these vital ecosystems.
The event builds on the outcomes of our previous webinar that took place during the EU Green Week 2020, on the topic of “Healthy wetlands: our best natural answer to the biodiversity, water and climate crises – the Mediterranean case”. Produced in collaboration with the Interreg Mediterranean and the Interreg Balkan programmes, the 2020 event highlighted the contribution of biodiversity to our economy and society, including a focus on its potential role in supporting a sustainable recovery following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Two years on from our first event, this 2022 webinar is an important opportunity to showcase progress in wetland ecosystem assessment at EU and Mediterranean level, to catalyse more action on conservation and restoration, and to help prioritise restoration efforts where they will make the most difference.
François Guerquin, Plan Bleu’s director, will intervene during this event jointly with international experts, EU policymakers and the regional conservation community. The event will promote exchanges with the audience on topics including:
- The current status of Mediterranean wetlands
- The wetland ecosystem policy framework
- Tools and approaches for wetland ecosystem assessment and mapping
- Wetlands as effective Nature-based Solutions
- Case studies of successful wetland restoration schemes
- Funding opportunities to promote healthy wetland ecosystems across the Mediterranean
