Marseille, May 23-24, 2012 : Regional conference on “Shifting to a Green Economy in the Mediterranean Region, Environment as an opportunity for jobs creation and growth” organized by Marseille Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) and the Office of Economic Cooperation for the Mediterranean and Middle East (OCEMO), in partnership with Plan Bleu.
In partnership with Plan Bleu, Marseille Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) and the Office of Economic Cooperation for the Mediterranean and Middle East (OCEMO) organized a regional conference on “Shifting to a Green Economy in the Mediterranean Region, Environment as an opportunity for jobs creation and growth”. It took place on May 23-24, 2012 in Marseille (France).
This event was organized in relation with the Rio+20 Summit which will specifically deal with green economy; therefore the conference aimed at gathering high level panels to discuss green economy, through sector analysis and macroeconomic models and policies recommendations, with the participation of the private sector.
A working group of experts and members of the civil society, particularly from the private sector, have met to prepare recommendations for a green economy in the Mediterranean which were presented and discussed at the conference. These recommendations benefited from feedbacks received by the working group during a side-event to the Barcelona Convention conference of Parties (Paris, February 2012).

Taking the opportunity of this conference, the draft CMI 2012 Med Report “Towards green growth in the Mediterranean countries”was submitted for consultation. The CMI 2012 Med Report is produced by the World Bank in collaboration with CMI partners: the European Investment Bank, the French Development Agency, Plan Bleu and Femise. It aims at giving evidence that green growth is a significant way to face the employment issue with short-term results.
Workshop “Green economy, governance and knowledge”
On May 24th in the afternoon, 35 representatives from different sectors and institutions from the three shores of the Mediterranean participated in the workshop “ Green economy, governance and knowledge ”, which took place at the CMI in Marseille. Following up on May 23-24th regional conference “ Towards green economy in the Mediterranean”, this workshop organized by Plan Bleu allowed to engage representatives from NGOs and the private sector, as well as from Ministries of the Environment, of planning or of finance from the Southern, Eastern and Northern shores of the Mediterranean in a constructive and intersectoral debate about green economy. This debate helped identifying specific subjects linked to green economy in the Mediterranean, some of which may be followed up upon and explored in more detail throughout specific activities which will be carried out under the Regional – Governance and Knowledge generation Project.
