MedECC scoping workshop “Towards an improved scientific assessment of climate change and its impacts in the Mediterranean Basin”

Plan Bleu and Labex OT-Med co-organized the MedECC scoping workshop “Towards an improved scientific assessment of climate change and its impacts in the Mediterranean Basin”, that took place in Aix-en-Provence, France, on October 10-12, 2016. The goal was to produce a detailed outline of the first MedECC report on climate and environmental change issues of importance for policymakers in the Mediterranean region.

Plan Bleu and Labex OT-Med co-organized the MedECC scoping workshop “Towards an improved scientific assessment of climate change and its impacts in the Mediterranean Basin”, that took place in Aix-en-Provence, France, on October 10-12, 2016.

The goal was be to produce a detailed outline of the first MedECC report on climate and environmental change issues of importance for policymakers in the Mediterranean region.

The workshop gathered around 50 participants from 15 countries (about 35 researchers and 15 representatives of socio-economic world). Special effort was put to assure balanced geographic and scientific representation.

Labeled COP22 by the Steering Committee of the COP22 to be held in November in Marrakech, supported by the Principality of Monaco, ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency, Agence de l’Environnement et de Maîtrise de l’Energie, France), Aix-Marseille University (Labex OT-Med), Aix-Marseille Metropole, and Plan Bleu, this workshop was conceived as a “Science – Policy Interface”, aiming at fostering dialogue between those two spheres, scientific communities and decision-making bodies.

MedECC echoes the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD 2016-2025), through the flagship initiative 4.1.9. “Establish a regional science-policy interface mechanism, including the social and behavioural sciences, (…) with a view to preparing consolidated regional scientific assessments and guidance on climate change trends, impacts and adaptation and mitigation options“.
