2nd meeting of the Steering Committee “Tourism and Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean”

The steering committee of the “Tourism and Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean” work program held its second meeting at Plan Bleu premises in Sophia-Antipolis on 22 September 2011. This committee brings together key program partners, such as the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD), the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Regional Activity Centre / Priority Actions Programme (PAP/RAC – UNEP/MAP), the Conservatoire du Littoral (France) and Professor Mohamed Larid (Algeria).

The steering committee of the ” Tourism and Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean ” work program held its second meeting at Plan Bleu premises in Sophia-Antipolis on 22 September 2011. This committee brings together key program partners , such as the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD), the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Regional Activity Centre  / Priority Actions Programme (PAP/RAC – UNEP/MAP), the Conservatoire du Littoral (France) and Professor Mohamed Larid (Algeria).

During this meeting chaired by Hugues Ravenel, Plan Bleu programme officers and experts (Julien Le Tellier, Jean-Pierre Giraud, Loïc Bourse, Ioannis Spilanis, and Alberto Cappato) presented the main results of the work program 2009-2011. This program was built on four components :

  • Monitoring of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSDD) indicators ;
  • Profile of a Sustainability in some Mediterranean tourism destinations ;
  • Tourism, energy, and climate change : the air transport issue ;
  • Cruising and yachting : equipment, facilities, pollution, and waste.

Feedbacks were sought both on the results and on the best ways to disseminate them : final reports available in Internet, publications, regional seminar, etc. The steering committee provided also Plan Bleu with pieces of advice to consolidate the work program by tackle the issues of sustainability assessment and labeling/certification of Mediterranean destinations, eligibility criteria for sustainable tourism projects, monitoring system and Mediterranean tourism observatory.
