Strengthen, structure and sustain a Science Policy Interface (SPI) for IMAP implementation in the Mediterranean

11/07/2019

Contracting Parties have committed to implementing EcAp with the ultimate objective of achieving Good Environmental Status (GES) of the Mediterranean Sea and coast. GES has been defined through eleven Ecological Objectives (EO) often grouped in three clusters and twenty-eight corresponding operational objectives. There is an increasing necessity for a clearer identification of policy-related knowledge needs, at the regional, national and local scales.

Science-Policy Interface (SPI) to support monitoring implementation plans as well as sub-regional and regional policy developments regarding EcAp clusters on pollution, contaminants & eutrophication, marine biodiversity & fisheries, coast & hydrography

02/15/2019

This new report provides Mediterranean stakeholders with key recommendations and conclusions that emerge from three workshops to support the  roadmap for the implementation of Ecosystem Approach (EcAp) and of Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme of the Mediterranean Sea and Coast (IMAP) decision by strengthening SPI.

Regional workshop: Human impacts on Mediterranean marine ecosystems and the economy

04/25/2018

This document was drafted following a workshop co-organised by the Centre Scientifique de Monaco and Plan Bleu, held in Monaco in October 2017 where 45 experts from 17 countries and from various fields of expertise, social sciences and natural sciences, participated. It analyses the main threats, vulnerability and ecological and human impacts. On the consensus of a wide range of specialists in different disciplines then some responses and policy options as well as main knowledge gaps and needs are proposed as conclusions for Mediterranean decision makers.

Science-policy interfaces for environmental governance in the Mediterranean

02/14/2018

Science-policy interfaces (SPIs) are tools that can be used to improve environmental conservation and management in the Mediterranean region. However, in order to do so, a shared understanding of the concept needs to be established, and current gaps need to be identified. This document is based on the work of several institutions, including Plan Bleu, and sets out to provide stakeholders in Mediterranean environmental governance with a brief analysis of the SPI concept within the regional context.

Socio-economic tools for supporting the achievement of Good Environmental Status of Mediterranean marine waters

Plan Bleu is happy to share its report "Socio-economic tools for supporting the achievement of Good Environmental Status of Mediterranean marine waters". This report has been elaborated by Plan Bleu as part of the project “Action Plans for Integrated Regional Monitoring Programmes, Coordinated Programmes of Measures and Addressing Data and Knowledge Gaps in Mediterranean Sea (ActionMed)”, funded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece).

Report of the Inception Workshop "“Implementation of the Ecosystem Approach in the Mediterranean: strengthening the science-policy interface"

10/10/2016

The workshop’s main objective was to foster the exchange of information between scientists and policy makers and highlight key policy challenges requiring scientific inputs in relation to monitoring, environmental assessment and new measures.

EcAP Science-Policy Interface (SPI) Brief

08/12/2016

Achieving the Good Environmental Status of the Mediterranean marine and coastal ecosystems – this is the goal of the Ecosystem Approach, a strategy initiated by the Barcelona Convention UNEP/MAP. The success of this approach will largely depend on how well scientists and decision makers interact in monitoring and assessing the status of ecosystems to elaborate evidence-based and adequate policies. Reason enough to focus on how to improve this science-policy interface.
