Regional workshop on the economic valuation of forest goods and services: support for on-site studies implementation

06/02/2014 to 06/05/2014

The regional Workshop on the economic valuation of forest goods and services, organized by Plan Bleu in Tunis (Tunisia) from 2nd to 5th June 2014, was the opportunity to promote exchanges between national experts, thematic referents and each countries focal point, as well as with the regional expert – namely the Mediterranean branch of the European Forestry Institute (EFIMED) and the Center for International Forestry Research (CFTC) – on the onsite studies implementation and to provide the national teams some additional answers and recommendations.

The regional cooperation project "Optimising the production of goods and services by Mediterranean forests in a context of global changes", funded by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), has launched since January 2014, implementing activities on socio-economic assessment of forest goods and services (component 2) on the pilot sites of its partner countries (Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco and Turkey).

The first step has consisted in strengthening methods and approaches. In support of implementation of socio-economic assessment of forest goods and services in the pilot sites, a regional workshop is organized in early June 2014 in Tunisia.

Organized by Plan Bleu, this regional workshop enabled, few months after the methodological note validation and on-site studies launching, to promote exchanges between national experts, thematic experts, focal points of each country and regional expert - represented by the Mediterranean Regional Office of the European Forest Institute (EFIMED) together with the Forest Sciences Centre of Catalonia (CTFC) - , on the implementation of the studies, and to provide some answers and additional recommendations to national teams experts.

The objectives of the regional workshop were:

  • Illustrate the concepts of the socio-economic assessment through examples mainly developed in the Mediterranean region;
  • Exchange on the objectives and implementation modalities of the assessment methods selected by partner countries in the pilot sites;
  • Deepen some methods  for facilitating the implementation in the pilot sites as well as  illustrate their use based on data collected by national experts in the pilot sites.

In order to promote synergies between components of the FFEM project, a regional mid-term workshop on forest ecosystems vulnerability and adaptation to climate changes (component 1) was held in parallel of the component 2 regional workshop. The second day of the workshop was fully dedicated to inter-component exchanges.
