Information exchange and data collection on water

Produce data, information and statistics on water, structured within information systems, for analysis and decision making.

Plan Bleu, the Mediterranean Environment and Sustainable Development Observatory (OMEDD)

In its role as of the Mediterranean Environment and Sustainable Development Information System (SIMEDD), Plan Bleu contributes to improving knowledge (territorial, time-based and socioeconomic data) at both national and watershed level, by endeavouring to organise the collection of information and data on:

  • water resources (renewable, exploitable, non-conventional resources, etc.) and their uses (demand, loss and efficiency);
  • pressures of water use on resources and the environment (abstraction, overexploitation, degradation);
  • risks (floods, droughts, dam silting, water shortages).

Gather data for and update the five priority MSSD monitoring indicators

As part of its Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) monitoring role, Plan Bleu is responsible for gathering, documenting and disseminating every two years the indicators designated as both “priority” and “additional”. The aim is to facilitate the implementation of the MSSD and monitor developments in the Mediterranean region and countries against the MSSD objectives.

The five priority indicators, updated in May 2013, concern the improvement of integrated management of water resources and water demand:

  • The water efficiency index (total and per sector with reference to efficiency objectives);
  • The added value of irrigated agricultural production compared to demand for irrigation water;
  • The exploitation index of renewable water resources;
  • The percentage of the population with access to drinking water (total, urban, rural) with reference to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs);
  • The percentage of the population with access to sanitation (total, urban, rural) with reference to the MDGs.

Contribute to the UfM’s draft Regional Water Information System

This project aims at promoting the collection, sharing and dissemination of basic water data by developing a regional database necessary for the integrated planning of water resources and water policing. The UfM project also includes a training component to strengthen countries’ capacities for data management and production of quality indicators.

As part of this project, conducted in partnership with EMWIS, Plan Bleu activities focus on:

  • analysis of the current situation and identification of needs for indicators on water demand management and the use of non-conventional resources;
  • selection of priority indicators (water demand management and non-conventional resources) and harmonization of their calculation methods (meeting with regional stakeholders and pilot countries).
